Like traditional dentures, implant dentures in Bloomingdale consist of a gum-colored acrylic base that is carefully molded to fit over your gum ridge. A full arch of custom-made teeth is set into the base to complete the denture. However, instead of sitting on top of the gums and relying on suction to keep them in place, implant dentures are supported by several small titanium posts embedded into the jawbone called dental implants. In general, there are two types of implant dentures:
Once a fixed implant denture has been secured onto the dental implants, it will stay firmly in place 24/7. You’ll continue to wear it while you eat, talk, sleep, and go about your daily life! It will only be removed for cleaning and inspection when you come visit us for checkups.
Alternatively removable implant dentures, or snap-on dentures, can be popped onto and off of the dental implants by the patient at any time. While this means you’ll have to remove them occasionally for at-home cleanings, removable implant dentures typically require less jawbone density than permanent ones.
First, you’ll visit us for a consultation, where we’ll determine if you’re a good candidate for implant dentures. In some cases, patients will need to undergo a preliminary bone graft, gum disease therapy, or other treatment to prepare. Then, four to eight dental implants will be placed into your jawbone via a minor oral surgery. It will take between three and six months for the implants to integrate with your jawbone in a process called osseointegration. Once that step is complete, you’ll return to our office to have your custom-made denture anchored into place.
