Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

There are a few important terms you should know that will help you better understand your dental insurance policy, including:

The capped-off amount of money that your dental insurance company will agree to pay for treatments over the course of a calendar year.
The set amount of money that your dental insurance company requires you to pay out-of-pocket before your benefits cover treatments.
The monthly or annual amount that you have to pay to receive benefits.
Waiting Period. A set period of time before you can receive full coverage for a specific treatment.

What Does My Dental Insurance Cover?

Virtually every dental insurance plan differs, which is why the best way to find out whether your policy will cover a specific treatment is to contact them directly and ask. That being said, many plans operate based on a 100-80-50 coverage structure. This means that they cover 100 percent of preventive care like checkups and cleanings, 80 percent of basic treatments like cavity fillings, and 50 percent of more invasive procedures like root canal therapy.
